Mexican Classics on Wax: DJs Preserving Sound Through Vinyl

Juan Gabriel vinyl record mariachi

I used to be the kid curled up under a jacket on a plastic chair, half asleep and waiting to go home while the older adults sang along to every ranchera, banda, and corrido passed down through generations. The music stirred something deep in them, a longing for a home that felt far away from where we were in Baja California.

It wasn’t until later in adulthood that I began to feel nostalgic for my childhood, reconnecting with it through the music I found while digging for records across Mexico and the United States.

I love putting on a Vicente Fernández album and hearing the crackles between Chente’s gritos. I light sage and a candle as I sit carefully with the lyrics of Chavela Vargas, Amalia Mendoza, and Juan Gabriel, whose voice always feels both tender and theatrical, carrying heartbreak, longing, and love with such honesty. Together, these artists and the many strong women’s voices that shaped ranchera music make listening feel almost spiritual.

Below is a collection of YouTube vinyl DJ sets featuring norteñas, rancheras, mariachi, and other sounds from Música Regional Mexicana, celebrating the warmth, nostalgia, and storytelling carried through these records.

1. Norteñas, Rancheras, Mariachi – Música Regional Mexicana [Vinyl Studio Session] with DJ Pax

DJ Pax, Humano Sound’s executive producer, shares a special vinyl mix inspired by the sounds many of us grew up hearing at family parties, carne asadas, and late nights with our elders singing along.

Pax explores Mexican songwriting from the 1960s–1980s through norteño, mariachi, corridos, and rancheras. Featuring artists like Juan Gabriel, the mix moves through themes of heartbreak, migration, regional pride, and storytelling that continue to shape Música Regional Mexicana today.
